Library Veterans Monument
The Veterans Monument Project was originally funded by the "Let's Go Native" grant from the National Garden Club and Principal Financial Group. Matching funds were received from our club and the City of Keystone Heights. The monument sits in the City Theme Park behind the library and had been dedicated to our Veterans by local AMVETS Post many years ago. It had once been surrounded by a fountain. The fountain and monument had been neglected for some time because of funding, maintenance and liability issues. Our club transformed the old fountain into a planter filled with native Florida plants and refurbished the monument. A rededication of the Monument was made on 9/11/08 to honor all of our veterans and those who lost their lives on that tragic day in 2001 were also remembered. The Garden Club of the Lakes has made a commitment to make sure the Veterans Monument and native plants are maintained and members meet there once a month for a "work party"
Work Day Thursday July 22nd, 2010
The Planter downtown is looking good. We had a great work group: GCL Secretary Beth Bission, Taylor Kennedy (Miss Outstanding Teen for Clay County), Beth's friend, Meaghan McNutt that just graduated from Florida Youth Challenge Academy, New member Sue Hammerstrom, Past President Zaire Aneney and Jackie Host ( who wrote information but didn't take pictures this time ) We had fun and managed to stay pretty cool in the shade.
