Yard of the Month for April 2011
SLOANE FAMILY EARNS YARD OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL
The Sloane house at 580 S. Lawrence Blvd. is the original Lawrence home built in 1921(a Sears Catalog craftsman home). They are the third owners and have done a magnificent job on maintaining 2.78 acre property. Who knew that we have a botanical garden right in the middle of Keystone Heights.
Along Lawrence Blvd there is a hedge of climbing primrose. As you turn the corner and enter the driveway on the left is a hedge of about 50 ligustrums and on the right sago palms. The entrance to the side yard facing Jasmine Blvd is flanked by 10 camellia bushes with two benches to sit on. In the side yard there are clusters of bamboo, live oak trees that are over 60 ft high, wisteria, numerous azalea bushes and a built-in fountain that has been refurbished which now holds plants instead of water. There are also hibiscus bushes and a large variety of other plants. There is also an American Olive tree that has the distinction of being the largest in the world.
The house itself is surrounded by azalea bushes. Mrs. Sloane said that they have at least 150 azaleas and 30 sago palms on the property. In the middle of the driveway is a plant area with 8 varieties of bromeliads and fox glove. The back yard faces the back of the Nature Park across from City Hall. In the back yard there are crape myrtle trees over 50 ft tall; a variety of fruit trees including chinese honey, grapefruit, fig, persimmons, kumquats, apple and 5 varieties of grapes. There is also a working outhouse which Mr. Sloane converted from the original outhouse; it now has a toilet and sink. The property also has sable palms, japanese boxwood and to many other plants to name. The Sloane's have put alot of love and care into this property and it shows. It is a feast for the eyes.
To nominate a home, church or business in Keystone Heights or Melrose please call Deirdre (352)281-3026 or Ursula (352) 473-8904

With loropetalum next to pepper bushes and azalea bushes makes a nice showing.

Deirdre captured the light in the background and make the palm tree show up nice..

A camella with moss in the background.

This program has been in place for 15 years. Since the beginning of the program about 80 students have worked on the property at one time or another.
Both the Visitor Center and the District Office building are bordered by hedges of schilling holly interlaced with azetec and super blue grasses. On the east side of the Vistor Center there is a very large red maple surrounded by schilling holly and ligustrum bushes with some knock -out-roses in-between them.
